Installation for Turned Posts
Before installation
Good industrial hygiene practices demand that when cutting, grinding,
sanding, cleaning or painting our products you must work in a well
ventilated area and wear personal protective equipment, including but not
limited to, a MSHA/NIOSH approved respirator, safety glasses or safety
shields, and appropriate gloves. When using other manufacture’s products ,
including but not limited to paint and cleaning solvents, always follow their
recommended safety instructions.
Turned Post Installation Instructions
1) Remove mounting plates along with the packaging.
2) Measure the opening where you will install the post.
3) Determine how much to trim from the post. Each mounting plate is
approximately 1/16 of an inch thick. Please allow for the mounting
plates when trimming the post.
4) Trim the top of the post with either a hacksaw or reciprocating saw
leaving the pipe flush with the shell. You must always cut the post
squarely in order to evenly distribute the weight around the load
bearing surface. Also, you must center load over post to evenly
distribute weight around the load bearing surface.
5) Measure and trim the bottom of the post to size.Make sure the bottom
of the pipe is flush with the shell.
6) Prime cut edges with a zinc based primer (Rustoleum, etc.). Also, apply
primer on the inside weld seam at least six inches into the post from the
bottom.
7) Fasten plate with edges down to the beam above.
8) Using a plumb tool mark the floor for the bottom plate. Please make
sure the location of the plates allows you to evenly distribute the load
across the entire load bearing surface.
9) Fasten the other plate to the floor with the edges up.
10) Raise the beam approximately 1/2 of an inch. Apply a bead of silicone
caulk to top and bottom of post. Set the post on the bottom plate.
Position the top of the post directly under the top plate. Lower the
beam on top of the post.
11) Check the post with a level. Remove all temporary supports.
12) Polyurethane is ultraviolet ray sensitive. Paint must be applied as
soon as possible after installation.Wipe column, capital and base
with a nongreasy solvent, such as denatured alcohol. This product
can be purchased wherever fine paints are sold. Sand and scuff
thoroughly with 120 grit sandpaper. Remove all dust. Fill any holes
with exterior spackle. Prime with XIM, or other similar primer,
such as Prep-Rite Pro Block, manufactured by SherwinWilliams.
Paint evenly with light coats of high quality exterior house paints.
